Supertest: European Tier IX Cruiser Tirfing

Update 15.8 will bring to the game a new line of cruisers. These will be the European cruisers with ships from nations such as Sweden, Poland, Greece, Sweden and, you guessed it, Sweden. There is only one ship that was actually built, being the tier VI, and for the rest, it's a lot of what-if or straight-up Wargaming creations. These cruisers will work as torpedo-focused ships with high speed and low detection range, and the same torpedoes as the European destroyers with high speed but low damage.

As per usual, Sweden is Wargaming's preferred nation in Europe, so we get an extra serving of Ikea meatballs with this new line of cruisers. Here is the Tier IX, Tirfing.

Historical background

There isn't much historical background to speak of for Tirfing.

Effectively, she is a hypothetical follow-up to the Tre Kronor-class that we have at Tier VI. The idea behind this ship is that Sweden would have gone for a design of cruiser with higher firepower to counter the Chapayev and Sverdlov-class cruisers of the USSR. The anti-aircraft capabilities are also greatly improved.

The B hull of Trifing represents the ship as it could have been in 1957.

As a reminder, this is a ship in testing; anything can change, so don't treat her as if she's already been released.

The Armor

External armor protection:

Somehow, the deck on the stern is 27 mm thick. I'm gonna assume that it's an oversight from Wargaming.

Personal Opinion

Overall, Tirfing looks solid. Both her firepower and torpedo armament are promising, as she boasts high HE DPM and gets the same torpedoes as Halland with 8 per side. She also gets a surprising 40 mm side casemate plating to shatter HE and bounce any AP shells in the game. Even the deck is 30 mm thick. To top it all off, she has one of the best detection ranges at tier IX.

Obviously, she still suffers from the very limited main battery firing range. Considering how often you end up bottom tier with Tier IX ships these days, it could be an issue with the way Tier X and Superships play.

Regardless...
