Supertest: European Tier VI Cruiser Tre Kronor

Update 15.8 will bring to the game a new line of cruisers. These will be the European cruisers with ships from nations such as Sweden, Poland, Greece, Sweden and, you guessed it, Sweden. There is only one ship that was actually built, being the tier VI, and for the rest, it's a lot of what-if or straight-up Wargaming creations. These cruisers will work as torpedo-focused ships with high speed and low detection range, and the same torpedoes as the European destroyers with high speed but low damage.

Let's now have a look at Tier VI, Tre Kronor.

Historical background

HSwMS Tre Kronor was the lead ship of the eponymous class of cruisers from the Royal Swedish Navy. The class consisted of two ships: Tre Kronor and Göta Lejon.

These cruisers were designed to replace the aging coastal defence battleships. By the end of the 1930s, these battleships were deemed too slow and too vulnerable to aerial attacks. As such, Sweden decided to change their naval strategy. The idea was to have three squadrons of destroyers, each led by a fast cruiser. The Swedish government commissioned the help of an Italian shipyard to design such ships in 1940, and the Tre Kronor-class was born. Initially, there were supposed to be three of them to lead each destroyer squadron, but for budgetary reasons, only two would be built. The third squadron was led by the upgraded HSwMS Gotland.

As World War II broke out, the Netherlands surrendered to Germany in 1940. At the time, they were working on the construction of the Eendracht-class of cruisers (or De Zeven Provinciën-class), which were meant to be armed with a mix of twin and triple turrets with 152 mm Bofors. Since one man's loss is another man's gain, Sweden was now in possession of brand new cruiser guns ready to be used. The Tre Kronor-class would then be armed with said weaponry in one triple and two twin dual-purpose turrets. The anti-air armament was also provided by Bofors with a mix of 40 mm and 20 mm guns. Finally, the ships were equipped with two triple torpedo launchers, one on each side.

Due to some delays, Tre Kronor was only laid down in September 1943, launched in December 1944, and commissioned in October 1947. As such, she missed the Second World War entirely. The ship was in active service until 1958, when she was then placed in reserve and later scrapped in 1964.

In World of Warships, we are getting Tre Kronor as she was when commissioned in 1947.

If you want to learn more about the Tre Kronor-class, here is a video from Drachinifel covering it:

As a reminder, this is a ship in testing; anything can change, so don't look at her like she would already be released.

Personal Opinion

For now, the ship looks alright. The torpedo-focused part of the tech tree isn't exactly shining with three torpedoes per side. However, she does have solid firepower, having the 6th highest HE DPM among tier VI cruisers, tied with De Grasse.
She also has a pretty good spaced armor scheme, so she won't get deleted the second a battleship looks at her, and she even gets an improved repair party that heals more per second and covers 60% of casemate damage instead of 50%.

At the same time, though, she has one of the shortest firing ranges, tied with Rahmat and Leipzig as the 4th lowest in her tier, and with the ballistic of her guns, her capacity to abuse island covers will be limited.

Regardless...

Thank you for reading this article!

Have a good one and see you soon!
